60% of the doctors' sexual harassment survey in the United States was done by colleagues

First of all, look at the composition of the contestants participating in this survey.

The total sample size of this survey is 6235, covering practitioners from 29 specialties. Among them, there are 3711 doctors and 440 residents.

60% of the participants were doctors, 16% were nurses and 7% were residents. In terms of gender ratio, male doctors accounted for 60% and male residents accounted for 54%. In terms of age distribution, the majority of inpatients are between 28 and 34 years old, and the age distribution of doctors is relatively uniform.

The content of the investigation is the degree of exposure to sexual harassment events in the past three years (including sexual harassment of oneself, seeing others being harassed, being accused of harassment, etc.).

What is sexual harassment?

In order to avoid misunderstandings among participants or to derive very different definitions, Medscape defines the contents of "sexual harassment" in great detail——

1 Receive unwanted text messages and emails with sexual implications;

2 The body or body organ being reviewed;

3 being asked to have sex;

  1. repeatedly being asked to date;

5 was asked to trade sex for promotion and salary increase;

6 Be threatened with sexual transactions, or you will be punished;

  1. Intentionally occupying body space;
  2. Being salted with pig hands, forced to hug, forced to touch;

9 Caressing oneself intentionally;

10 Grasp and touch the body;

11 Rape.

How many victims?

7% of doctors said they had been sexually harassed in the past three years, which is much lower than the data of more than 40% in a report of Science

14% said they had witnessed sexual harassment. And 2% said "others said I was sexually harassed".

In addition, the proportion of residents who reported being sexually harassed was higher than that of doctors, and 9% of residents said they were sexually harassed. A resident said in a message that the outpatient stool was not enough, and the attending doctor actually said "sit on my thigh"!

Male doctors are also victims

Although there are more female doctors who suffer from sexual harassment, there are also a considerable number of male doctors who are victims of sexual harassment. In this survey, 89 male doctors said they had been sexually harassed, and 178 female doctors said they had been harassed.

A male inpatient said, "A female colleague asked for my phone number from elsewhere and often sent me sexually suggestive text messages."

Common ways of sexual harassment

The most frequent form of sexual harassment is intentional encroachment on body space, which is intentionally too close, accounting for 55%; The second place is to evaluate the body and body organs with sexual implications, and deliberately look at the body with sexual implications; The third is salty pig hands, forced hug and forced physical contact; The fourth is repeatedly asked to date or to pursue unilaterally; The fifth is being asked to have sex.

Victims who are harassed are often not harassed only once, but repeatedly. According to statistics, sending messages with sexual meaning, evaluating body and organs, and intentionally occupying body space are the most frequently repeated sexual harassment, often reaching more than 10 times.

Many of the harassed will be harassed by many people.

Among doctors, only 32% of victims of sexual harassment were harassed by only one person, 47% were harassed by 2-3 people, and 5% were even harassed by more than 7 people.

Characteristics of sexual harassers

For doctors, most of the harassers are medical care, of which doctors account for 47%. The "other" option includes managers, patients and other non-medical related persons.

For residents, doctors are the biggest source of sexual harassment.

According to statistics, the superiors account for 37% of the harassers, the peers account for 26%, and 37% of the subordinates harass the superiors.

28% of sexual harassers are in primary medical institutions, and 72% are professional staff. According to statistics, there is no obvious difference in the proportion of sexual harassment among different specialties.

The vast majority of women doctors who sexually harass are men, while the data reported by male doctors show that 23% of those who sexually harass male doctors are also men. Medscape added that because male doctors tend to hide when they are subjected to such sexual harassment, the proportion of real data may be higher.

A male doctor said that a male nurse often touched him. On one occasion, the male nurse even touched him while he was treating an anesthetized patient. Unable to bear it, he reported the male nurse, but the other side didn't have any problems. The superior also let them continue to work together.

"I feel so frustrated," said the male doctor.

Age group of sexual harassment

The age group most prone to sexual harassment is 35-44, but it does not mean that other age groups do not have sexual harassment.

What will you do if you are sexually harassed

More than half choose to do nothing. Among those who have feedback, their efforts vary greatly.

Among those who gave feedback, a few people finally got satisfactory results.

A doctor said that it was useless for her to warn the harasser to tell her superiors, even to get into trouble with the personnel. As a result, the personnel only put the hospital's interests first, and directly suppressed the matter.

It is precisely because "no good result can be obtained even if you make trouble" that many people choose to be silent. Compared with doctors, the proportion of residents who choose not to say anything is higher.

Will sexual harassment affect work

After being sexually harassed, will your ability to work as a doctor be affected? The survey results showed that 25% of the people said they would not have any impact at all, and 18% said they would have serious impact. From left to right, as the color block becomes lighter, the impact will increase.

Specific ways of influence include avoiding sexual harassment (39%), unwilling to associate with colleagues (27%), wanting to resign (22%), inability to concentrate (18%), having resigned (14%), etc

The outcome of alleged sexual harassment

Remember the 2% of doctors accused of sexual harassment in this investigation? Most of them think that they are innocent, do not sexually harass others, and are often misunderstood, or their original intention is good

Most of them have been investigated by the unit. The survey results show that 71% of the doctors accused of sexual harassment are exempted from responsibility, and only 20% are considered to be responsible.

Anti-sexual harassment training

More than half of the units have anti-sexual harassment training programs.

However, the real effect of such programs has been questioned for a long time. According to a 2016 report of the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, such anti-sexual harassment training generally only focuses on illegal issues.

An insider commented: "This kind of 'training' may also be to show you 20 minutes of film, which will not be of any use."
