Researchers at the Yale School of Management in the United States selected 156 subjects and asked them to read a novel. One of the main characters was a fictional chairman of the board of directors, who was described by the researchers as four types: talkative male, silent male, talkative female, and silent female. After subjects rated the job competence of these four characters, the researchers found that the talkative male scored the highest and the talkative female scored the lowest. In another study that examined subjects' perceptions of U.S. senators by gender, they found that male senators who were talkative were perceived to be the most influential, while no such effect was seen in female senators.

The researchers concluded that talkative female employees would be perceived as complaining and blaming, or even displaying arrogance and self-righteousness. This may be a gender bias in organizational culture, but it's also necessary for women to be as silent as possible in the workplace if they want to succeed in their careers.
